DESCRIPTION:
This is a Contemporary Modern Technique class that has been influenced by Ideokinesis, Alexander, and Klein techniques. It begins by focusing on anatomical alignment while lubricating the joints, warming and stretching muscles. We begin in constructive rest in a quick floor-barre before moving to sequential floor work inspired by Bartenieff Fundamentals, which sets up patterns for full-bodied, open dancing. The middle section has a yoga stretch that has been influenced by somatic and alignment work. Center work focuses on foot, back, and leg exercises before diving into handstands. This class emphasizes a fluid spine and grounded weight while highlighting specificity of initiation, alignment and releasing into space.
The movement builds dynamically from subtle exercises into large athletic phrases that move in and out of the floor, on the hands, and through space with easy, exciting sequential momentum. Improvisation is used to explore the somatic work toward the beginning of class as it relates to the individual dancers, and to develop material later in class, allowing dancers to find their own movement voice within the choreographed phrase material.
