Xander: What’s dancing anyways? Class #3 (subbed by shosh isaacs)

Xander: What's dancing anyways?- Wednesdays 10-11:30AM, November-December 2025
from $0.00

DESCRIPTION: Here’s the class format:

Time to arrive. Five-ish minutes SHAKE. One s l o w (even slower) walk across the room. Non-stopping practice. Open score. (subject to change! it’s improvisation)

Each week, I will introduce questions, concepts, and/or conflicts to guide our attention and train our choreographic minds. I’m pulling together improvisational, task-ish, practices I’ve learned and gathered in the past years. Ones that have re-shaped me enough that I kept doing them on my own after the class/workshop/intensive was over. Namely, I draw from Jared Williams and Anya Smolnikova’s shake format, Ryuta Iwashita and Jeanine Durning's stream of conscious type practices, Heidi Henderson’s slow walking, and Julianna May’s Choreographic Idioms class.

This is a laboratory where we embrace not-knowing-what’s-going-to-happen. We aim toward trusting the velocity of our minds and allowing the impulses of our bodies. Let’s be wrong and bad and dance.?

LEVEL: Intermediate- some skill in improvisation and durational practice will be incredibly supportive to this class, whether in dance, theatre, music or a different creative discipline.

PAYMENT: Classes are pay-what-you-can, $15-$20 suggested!

Optional $1 Donation to Cover Fees

1316 S. 9th Street

DESCRIPTION: Getting Stuck/Mouth Rot is a dance practice by Micah Lat or Rot about being, becoming, listening, and responding. It is a moment to re-act to being "touched" by sound, light, and our neighbor. The class will invite participants to get stuck in repetitious movement. To see, to be seen, and to act! To respond. This is an opportunity to be honest and absurd in a group setting. This is an invitation to invite your body to ask itself what it's up as it gets up to move. We'll ask each other "what just happened?" at the end again and again and again.

from $0.00

Thursday 10/30/2025
7-8:30PM @ CHI Movement Arts Center
1316 S. 9th Street

DESCRIPTION: Spiral Body Techniques® (SBT) class with Harlee invites dancers into an exploration of flow, grounding, and expressive range. Through spontaneously composed phrases that respond to the dancers in the room, we will begin on the ground and build toward locomotive dancing. Together we will access the mobility of the trunk and torso, explore the complex intelligence of the ball-and-socket joints, and cultivate embodied and spatial awareness that supports both the pursuit of excellence and the prevention of injury or unnecessary strain.

Spiral Body Techniques® (SBT) is the framework for dance and teaching movement developed by choreographer Molly Shanahan. Harlee has been an advanced student of Spiral Body Techniques® since 2016, and is part of the inaugural cohort of certified instructors (2023).

LEVEL: Open. This class welcomes adults of all levels—from experienced dancers seeking to expand their range to newcomers drawn to a practice grounded in both excellence and ease.

from $0.00

Thursday 10/16/2025
7-8:30PM @ CHI Movement Arts Center
1316 S. 9th Street

DESCRIPTION: Widening the Circle, a movement improvisation class open to all levels, is an invitation into movement, mindfulness, and presence. Choreographer and performer Megan Bridge’s performance, teaching, and research centers around consciousness & attention in the embodied, moving self. This class will guide students to heighten perception and use all their senses, accessing their own phenomenological experience and using it as the very material of their own performance. Formal dance training is not required, but participants should be comfortable in their bodies and, ideally, have some kind of regular physical practice.

Megan Bridge’s teaching draws on her own decades-long investigations into bodywork, somatics, dancing improvisationally, and her intensive study with masters of improvised dance such as Brigitta Herrmann, Steve Paxton, Lisa Nelson, Deborah Hay, Manfred Fischbeck, and Merian Soto.

from $0.00

Saturday 10/11/2025
1-2:30PM @ CHI Movement Arts Center
1316 S. 9th Street

DESCRIPTION: Invagination–not to be confused with the anatomical vagina–is a fold, or the act of folding. It is a biological process, a state of being, an embrace, and a way of relating to space and others. We originate as a simple structure that divides and complexifies, enabling us to perform more refined processes through increased surface area. The embryological development of the various tissues in the body go through a fractal process of coiling, creasing, and differentiating – producing infinite folds. In this class we will practice invagination and develop a queer, feminist reimagining of space through somatic research, embodied embryology, ensemble dance improvisation, and performance practice.

LEVEL: Open. All levels of experience are welcome and all genders are encouraged to engage in this work!

Moved by Questions

This improvisational contemporary dance workshop invites participants to let questions be the motor of their dance. Instead of following instructions, we’ll generate questions—opening doors to new sensations, perspectives, and possibilities of movement. We’ll explore different kinds of questions: those about sensation, quality of movement, and mapping of the body as if we were inhabiting it for the very first time. Questions don’t necessarily ask for solid answers—they serve as tools for opening space for exploration and curiosity.

Inspired by the choreographic practices of Berlin-based Anna Nowicka and Sweden-based Israel Aloni.
