Sarah-Jane El Kassmi: Out of Your Head, Into Your Body (Class #6)
DESCRIPTION:
Out of Your Head, Into Your Body is a movement-based dance class series designed to help participants reconnect with their bodies as sites of joy, curiosity, and aliveness. In a culture that prioritizes productivity, cognition, and constant stimulation, many of us experience disconnection from physical sensation, pleasure, and spontaneous expression. This series offers an invitation to soften the grip of the mind and re-enter the body through music, play, repetition, and embodied exploration.
Rather than teaching choreography to be memorized, each class centers on guided prompts that encourage participants to listen inwardly and allow movement to arise organically. Practices include closing the eyes to heighten sensation, repeating simple or “mundane” movements to access flow state, allowing stretches to organically evolve into dance, and experimenting with opposite or unfamiliar movement pathways. Participants are encouraged to ask: What if I moved this way instead? What happens when I let the music move through me rather than trying to perform?
Joy is treated as both a practice and a birthright. Through smiling, jumping, shaking, and embodying the inner child, dancers are invited to remember the simple pleasure of being alive in a body. The series emphasizes presence over perfection, sensation over aesthetics, and freedom over form - creating a space where movement becomes a form of emotional release, self-trust, and embodied remembering.
LEVEL: Beginner- Intermediate
This is for all levels - the focus will be to connect to our bodies and find joy

Kalila Kingsford Smith- Spiral Body Techniques® Class #6
Wednesdays 10-11:30AM May and June 2026
Mascher Space
1170 S Broad St.
Philadelphia, PA 19146
DESCRIPTION: Essential Level Spiral Body Techniques® classes introduce and develop foundational movement principles, emphasizing increasing whole-self dancing, articulation and coordinated availability of the ball-and-socket joints, and moving with a dynamic center through the release and reengagement of musculature. All phrasework in SBT is spontaneously composed, so both the teacher and the student are practicing learning the phrase at the same time, generating repeatable phrases of increasing complexity with an emphasis on building trust in body intelligence more than "getting the steps right." We will practice the somatics of sensing and exploring these movements in order to “really dance” the more complex phrasework. Spiral Body Techniques® (SBT) is the dance and movement framework developed by choreographer Molly Shanahan. This SBT® class series for Philly Dance Share will be taught by Kalila Kingsford Smith, a certified Essential Level SBT teacher. These classes are intended for intermediate contemporary dancers, with all levels welcome to participate, making mindful adjustments to suit their abilities. Long sleeves and/or kneepads recommended.

Natanya Apfelbaum- Healing Bellydance
Thursday 5/14
7-8:30PM @ & Space
1021 Hamilton Street, Floor 3
DESCRIPTION: Like water, your body wants to move! This will be an introduction to the ancient and sacred art of bellydancing. The ethos of this class is that bellydance is an awakening of the natural movements of the body, and flows from the anatomy of bones, muscles and breath. Bodies need motion and much contemporary dis-ease comes from stuckness in the body-mind. Bellydance is an incredible medicine for dispelling this stuckness ~ bringing both sensuous flow and percussive movement to wake up and break up places that have been held for too long.
This class will be oriented to those who love to dance but have had a difficult experience of body, knowing that the best way to dance more is to show up and dance with whatever ability you have today.

Pheobe Ricker- Rubber Bands, Strings, and Springs
Thursday 5/28
7-8:30PM @ & Space
1021 Hamilton Street, Floor 3
DESCRIPTION: In this class, we will play with ideas of energy storage and release, repetition and reversal, winding and unwinding-- thinking of our bodies as rubber bands, strings, or springs. We will increase awareness of the paths our bodies are taking through time and space and follow these threads back and forth by breaking choreography into symmetrical "halves". This class will offer both a mental and physical challenge to dancers across a wide range of abilities as we reframe how to intuitively process timing, direction, and transitions.
Instagram: @phoebericker
LEVEL: Beginner-Intermediate
MASKING: Masks optional but encouraged.
Dancers will feel appropriately challenged as long as they are aware of the basic structure of a typical contemporary dance class (warm up, stretch, learning short combinations) and know their own bodies' limits. Advanced strength, flexibility, and technique are not necessary to succeed in this class. Modifications will be provided to dancers who need them.

DESCRIPTION: We’re bringing it back to your 2012 turns and progressions class. Think jazz class across the floor realness. We’ll start with a guided warmup to wake up and engage our muscles and joints and transition into across-the-floor work, focusing on jazz technique foundations including turns, progressions, jumps, and dynamic traveling phrases. Dancers can expect a mix of drills and combinations designed to build stability and power behind our fundamentals. This class is about refining technique while reconnecting with the joy of dancing by tapping into that nostalgic, high-energy feeling that made you fall in love with jazz in the first place.

Ben Capp- Image & Impulse Laboratory Class #3 *SUBBED BY EMMA HALPER*
Saturdays in May + June 2026
1-3PM @ & Space
1021 Hamilton St #302
DESCRIPTION: What is an impulse? How does impulse become action? How do impulses generate more impulses? How do images (emotions, associations, thoughts, imagined realities, and embodied sensations) feed movement? How does movement, in turn, feed image?
In this series we will explore containers for improvisational movement that stimulate the imagination and cultivate curiosity. We will build psychosomatic awareness in the presence of others, building trust with one another so that we can move with more agency and freedom.
No performance experience is required. This practice finds a meeting point between theater, dance, ritual, and just being a regular human. Participants are encouraged to attend more than one session to develop familiarity with the exercises and build a strong group dynamic.
Masks optional.

Kalila Kingsford Smith- Spiral Body Techniques® Class #2
For more information about Spiral Body Techniques® visit www.mollyshanahanspiralbody.com
These classes are intended for intermediate contemporary dancers, with all levels welcome to participate, making mindful adjustments to suit their abilities. Long sleeves and/or kneepads recommended.
