Philadelphia Dance Projects x Philly Dance Share

Trilateral Dance Exchange Offerings

PDS is partnering with the PDP Trilateral Artist Exchange, a three city artist-led international residency program between Philadelphia, Budapest, and Sofia.

From September 27-29, come be part of three offerings by each of the Trilateral artists rooted in their distinct artistic processes. The Trilateral Offerings are an invitation to engage in collective research, and a chance for the exchange artists to engage with you, and how local artists in Philly are thinking and moving.

Note from Adam Kerbel, the lead Philly artist of the exchange:

“During our time in Philly, we will be dancing, researching, seeing lots of work, and exploring parts of Philadelphia history. As we develop insight about ourselves and the cultures that we bring into our movement practices, we have a strong desire to be in step with members of the local community, too. We invite you to join us, bring your perspectives, and contribute to our next steps together.”

Leaving things unfinished

Inspired by our residency time together, I offer this question: what am I trying to capture when I’m making a dance? For this session, we will spend time generating material from scratch, iterating on it, and then turning our focus towards the environment we’re working in. Rather than pinning down the dance we’re busy making, we’ll incorporate lighting, space, and playful naughtyness to provoke movement compositions that are layered responses to what we navigate more broadly. I see this session in relief to the pace of Fringe season; an invitation to go somewhere else from here.

PDP x PDS Workshop #2- Viola Lévai
from $0.00

Sunday, September 28, 1-3PM
@ Mascher Space (1170 S Broad St)

Meeting point

I would like to invite you for a movement workshop which is inspired by the time I spent in Philadelphia. As a Hungarian artist, I'm curious what arises to me, how can I channel it to my mody and how can I channel back for the people. I'm curious how we can meet in the universal language of movement and awareness to each other and to space.

PDP x PDS Workshop #3- Emiliya Toncheva
from $0.00

Monday, September 29, 6-8PM
@ Mascher Space (1170 S Broad St)

Moved by Questions

This improvisational contemporary dance workshop invites participants to let questions be the motor of their dance. Instead of following instructions, we’ll generate questions—opening doors to new sensations, perspectives, and possibilities of movement. We’ll explore different kinds of questions: those about sensation, quality of movement, and mapping of the body as if we were inhabiting it for the very first time. Questions don’t necessarily ask for solid answers—they serve as tools for opening space for exploration and curiosity.

Inspired by the choreographic practices of Berlin-based Anna Nowicka and Sweden-based Israel Aloni.

  • Viola Lévai

    BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

Viola Lévai is a Budapest-based freelance contemporary dancer. “I finished my BA at the Budapest Circus Arts and Contemporary Dance College 10 years ago as a Contemporary Dancer and completed my MA there as a Dance Teacher 3 years ago. Currently, I teach release technique and contact improvisation at the same institution and its preparatory course. Alongside teaching, I create and perform in various projects, mainly presented in alternative or site-specific settings. My most recent community- based movement research was a collaboration with the Kaland Budapest collective. We explored “Contact Parkour” as a potential form of community movement practice… What excites me most is discovering and deepening our knowledge of the body through research and play and discovering its infinite possibility. I’m passionate about making creativity and physical self-expression accessible to adults—both in the professional and amateur spheres. I see dance not just as performance, but as a shared inquiry—something that lives between people and grows
    through exchange.” https://violaworks.hu/
