DESCRIPTION:
Over the last 9 years, I have developed an improvisational method that has been particularly generative for me. It focuses on 'undoing' much of what I realized was my unconscious practice as a contemporary/post-modern/concert dance improvisor. I will share from that practice in the hopes it can be generative for participants as well- whether they are seasoned improvisors interested in a challenge, or dancers new to improvisation and open to learning post-modern improvisational conventions 'from the inside out'.
After warming up and practicing together we will take time to talk about the ways in which conventions and priorities in artistic practice are always inescapable. For example, as much as this method undoes some conventions, it underscores other conventions- chief among them the idea that rigor is of the highest importance. We will excavate 'rigor' as a concept, and as a tool, with time given for participants to move/think about the ways in which rigor may be applicable to their personal choreographic/improvisational practices.
While it is possible to drop in for select dates, participants will benefit from being able to accumulate information and practice over multiple classes.
