mikah simone/bd- I'm the Love of Your Life
Saturday May 3rd, 2025
1-2:30PM @ CHI Movement Arts Center
1316 S. 9th Street
I’m the love of your life is a contemporary technique dance class exploring the momentum that comes with loving and falling in love with yourself. Through this practice, we seek to somatically understand how the phrase “I am the love of your life” can be turned inward and become a tool in interrogating, observing, and unraveling the oppressive systems we’ve learned and continually perpetuate. Through personal reflection, we will individually use this somatic experience to understand both the questions as well as the ease of experiencing this kind of self love.
In this class we will begin with floorwork, explore and define momentum with a loose movement phrase and create solo phrases defining this feeling.
Masks encouraged.

Olivia Mohsen Al Samadi- Embody, Adapt, Create: Playful Approaches to Phrasework
Saturday April 5th, 2025
1-2:30PM @ CHI Movement Arts Center
1316 S. 9th Street
Join Olivia for a dynamic and exploratory movement experience that invites you to engage with her choreographic and improvisational practices in a way that feels personal, playful, and spacious.
We’ll begin with guided improvisational prompts drawn from Olivia’s creative process to gently warm up body and mind, encouraging you to make your own choices and explore agency in movement. From there, we’ll move through set sequences to prepare for more dynamic patterns, building the awareness and physicality needed for what comes next.
To close, you’ll learn a choreographed phrase, with space to shape it through your own choices. While we’ll start from the same foundation, dancers are encouraged to explore unique interpretations — shifting dynamics, adding personal detail, and playing with affect and intention. Think of this part as "trying on" Olivia’s movement style like playing dress-up: fully embody it, adapt it, or leave parts behind — all approaches are welcome.
This class centers individual experience within a shared space and welcomes movers of all backgrounds. Modifications and personal choices are supported throughout. Please note that while movement sequences are rooted in modern dance techniques and were created with intermediate to experienced dancers in mind, you are encouraged to engage with them in a way that feels right for you.
Come ready to explore, play, and move with curiosity!
All proceeds will be donated to the Philadelphia chapter of the Palestine Children's Relief Fund, a nonprofit dedicated to healing the wounds of war and occupation in the Middle East.

Tamar Gutherz: Feed the Floor- Class #4
DESCRIPTION: We'll start with some guided imagery and Tai Chi-inspired exercises. We'll use our weight as inspiration and dropping the weight as an impetus for movement. Exploring different ways of moving in & out of the floor through the lens of a simple warm-up phrase. I’m interested in Figure 8 patterns that naturally exist in our bodies. How can we recycle this energy to spiral in and out of the floor, and move effortlessly through space? What is the right amount of energy / tone needed to protect ourselves from the floor and recycle our momentum? How do we generate momentum? How do we control it?
We'll investigate the relationship between our core and extremities. Where does my center stop and start? How is my breath related to that? We'll experiment with sequential spines versus compact, concentrated ones-- and gauge what is needed in each moment. We’ll experiment with off balances, riding waves of momentum, and visit some light inversions. We will practice a loving yet loose relationship to form and practice feeding the floor as we move through space.
LEVEL: Intermediate
PAYMENT: Classes are pay-what-you-can, $15-$20 suggested!

DANCE DANCE FOR LIBERATION: Community Teach-In on Organizing and PACBI with Dancers for Palestine
March 8th, 12:00pm - 2:30pm
Studio 34, 4522 Baltimore Avenue in West Philly
There will be tea and cookies!*
Members of the Dancers for Palestine Lead Organizing Team will share our organizing strategy, successes and challenges in organizing the dance field, and the role of arts and culture in the movement for Palestinian Liberation. We will talk about our attempts to move the dance field into more significant, material solidarity with Palestine through the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI). We will address the dance field’s specific histories and dynamics when it comes to organizing, as well as what dance can teach us about organizing within any discipline or community. We’ll answer questions and brainstorm with attendees about their specific struggles and curiosities, including Philadelphia-specific organizing tactics and potential targets for PACBI campaigns.
Dancers for Palestine (D4P) is an autonomous group of dance workers who organize in solidarity with the global movement for Palestinian liberation. Formed during Israel’s genocidal attack on Gaza beginning in 2023, D4P seeks to both cohere and create a dance community which is vocal and active in its support of the Palestinian people.
D4P is a local and international endeavor with a core organizing group in NYC and an ever expanding network of dancers and organizers working toward a dance field free from complicity in genocide, imperialism, white supremacy, and all systems of oppression. D4P’s work has included protest and direct action, political education events, art-based fundraising, and campaigns to move dance institutions into alignment with the Palestinian Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel and against repressive anti-boycott policies.
